LAYERING COMMON SPACE
The site, complex from the point of view of morphology, orientation, insulation, connectivity and access, imposed those words as crucial questions in the design process. Slope and orientation analysis determined the position of the main pedestrian pathway in a form of loop that reconnects and reactivates the two plots. This connection originates/ends in a major public space which is delineated by new public volumes imagined, in architectural terms, as opened pavilion type space where interior merges with exterior, the roof becomes a terrace and the atmosphere is, above all, inclusive. Main pedestrian connection acts as a point of transition from a completely public environment to a more private one and sets the second reoccurring theme of the project - that is what we call LAYERING OF COMMON SPACE. If we summarize our approach towards the landscape as „green“ (preserving the maximum of existing higher vegetation) and pedestrian friendly than our approach to senior living could be summarized as involved and active. The goal is to create an environment in which a person is offered a sequence of different spontaneous possibilities for interaction/socialization. In order to do that the total number of individual units was divided into 4 groups, each housing 10 people. The core of a single group of housing is dual. One part is a semi enclosed square oriented in a way that it offers view towards the surrounding waterways and in the same time sets a perfect stage for unplanned meeting. The other is closer to the protective idea of a house and is envisioned as an interpretation of a porch – partly enclosed, provides shade and cover, more intimate in atmosphere. It is an element which, by connecting very basic cubical volumes in a manner guided by specific position, brings diversity to the 4 groups of housing units.
All of the single units face the square (porch is a point of entrance) as well as a private garden from which a common garden is accessible - in that manner the “backside” effect is avoided. The next type of environment in the layering sequence would be the street - woonerf type, pedestrian friendly , connected to the pedestrian walkway, after which follows the public park with its variety of activities and than the existing neighboring streets.
